Dementia and Speech Pathology is more than Dysphagia

This Dementia Action Week, our Speech Pathology team are highlighting how they can help people with Dementia for more than dysphagia. There is a large service gap in speech pathology services in dementia, especially communication-based interventions. The most common referrals to Speech Pathology when someone has dementia are difficulties in swallowing.

While dysphagia is incredibly prevalent in individuals with dementia, every single person with dementia will experience communication difficulties. Speech Pathologist’s can play a large role in assisting someone with dementia with their communication. During our Webinar, we discussed how Speech Pathologists can assist those with Dementia.

Dementia and Speech Pathology: more than Dysphagia VIDEO

Speech Pathologists can enable people living with dementia to maintain roles, relationships, and meaningful participation in their lives. Referrals to Speech Pathologists in dementia are more than just dysphagia.

We encourage everyone to learn more about how to help people with Dementia. This webinar was recorded during Dementia Action Week and is presented by Mikaela Papadimitriou, Certified Practising Speech Pathologist for OSCAR Care Group.

How to best communicate with someone with Dementia

Dementia can affect how individuals both express themselves and understand the information that is communicated to them. This may result in communication breakdowns when people with dementia speak and socialise with family members, friends, and staff members.
